Breakfast with Rolker Gracie 05/19/09
A couple of years ago, I was having breakfast alone with Rolker Gracie. Actually, I was serving Rolker his breakfast (coffee, bagel, butter) and watching him eat. Rolker has stayed at my home while in Connecticut conducting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seminars.
He noticed me watching him and decided to let me know that he also was watching me.
Pointing to one of his eyes, and speaking in his distinctive accent, Rolker said, "Bruno, I watch you. I see your Jiu-Jitsu. You're getting very, very good..."
I responded, "Well, thank you, Rolker. Even though it's my busy season at work, I have been training two or three times a week."
Without the slightest pause, Rolker, wiping a touch of butter from the side of his mouth with a napkin, responded, "Bruno, this is your problem. Jiu-Jitsu, everyday. Monday, I run and do Jiu-Jitsu. Tuesday, I pump iron and do Jiu-Jitsu. Wednesday, I swim and do Jiu-Jitsu. Thursday, Jiu-Jitsu. Friday, Jiu-Jitsu. Saturday, Jiu-Jitsu. Sunday, God says, "No Jiu-Jitsu".
Okay, then. Felt pretty good there for a second or two. I cleared the table, grabbed Rolker's gear, and transported my teacher and friend to that morning's seminar. It would be the third (3 hour) seminar I attended in two days.
Three down, three to go, with Sunday set aside for Jiu-Jitsu introspection …each week…till my last breath. I can do it!
