Change is good. Change is necessary. Change is fun.
Over four years ago, when I showed up for my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) class at my Gracie Jiu-Jitsu school in an eggplant colored tie-dyed Gi, heads turned. What?! Not white? Not black? Not blue? Of course, everyone's question was "Is that okay?"
For years, I have been training in my custom colored and tie-dyed Gis at classes and seminars run by Royce Gracie, Rolker Gracie, Rodrigo Gracie, and Marco De Lima. I’ve worn them and won at NAGA.
What is most important is my BJJ game, not the color of my Gi.
BJJ, as with other martial arts, is so much about self-expression. One must be creative. One must improvise. One must be strong-minded. One must not be afraid to commit. One must be confident. And we all go about it differently.
Whatever our martial art of choice is, we must approach it with integrity, discipline, and respect. And the beauty within the structure of each of our arts is that we also have freedom of expression. In different ways, each of our arts allows us to peel off that extra layer of skin that we sometimes grow during a tough day at the office, or a poor night's sleep.
Join us. Train hard. Have fun. Express yourself.
Be The Wave.™
